Services

Full Mouth Examination

Each appointment begins with a thorough oral evaluation using a bright light and full-mouth speculum.

We assess facial symmetry and balance, and examine the lips, mucosa, incisors, canines, wolf teeth, premolars, molars, tongue, gingiva, and palate to identify any abnormalities or imbalances that may affect comfort or performance.

Full Mouth Equilibration

It’s never “just a float.” Every horse receives a complete balancing to achieve proper three-point

contact, correct occlusal angles, and removal of any sharp enamel points or malocclusions. This

ensures optimal comfort, chewing efficiency, and performance under bit.

Tartar Removal

Gentle removal of accumulated tartar to promote gum health and prevent infection.

Cap Removal

Safe and effective removal of retained deciduous teeth (“caps”) to prevent discomfort and interference

with permanent tooth eruption.

Incisor adjustments

Realigning the incisors restores correct three-point balance, improves chewing efficiency, and supports healthy movement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). By addressing the incisors with precision, we create lasting comfort and optimal performance for every horse.

Equipment

At Glade Valley Equine Dental Services, we proudly utilize state-of-the-art equipment from Dynamic Equine to ensure the highest standard of care for every horse. This advanced technology is designed with precision engineering to deliver low vibration performance, making each procedure more comfortable and well-tolerated by the horse. The equipment’s innovative design allows for exceptional control and accuracy, promoting both safety and effectiveness throughout every dental exam and equilibration. By combining expert technique with the most trusted tools in the industry, we’re able to provide gentle, thorough, and reliable dental care that supports optimal health and performance.

Records made easy

We utilize the Pimbury Equine Dental App to provide each client with a professional, easy-to-understand digital dental chart following every appointment. This detailed chart includes a full diagram of your horse’s mouth, a written summary of all procedures performed, and an itemized receipt for complete transparency. Before and after photos can be added to visually document progress and results. You’ll also receive a convenient email reminder when your horse is due for their next dental exam, helping you stay on top of routine care. All charts are securely stored, easily printable, and can be shared directly with your veterinarian to ensure seamless communication and continuity of care.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is equilibration?

Equilibration is the process of restoring proper alignment and harmony throughout a horse’s mouth — it’s far more than simply “floating the teeth.” A balanced mouth relies on three critical points of contact: the incisors at the front, the molars at the back, and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) that connects the jaw to the skull. When these three points are correctly balanced, the horse can chew comfortably, perform willingly, and maintain even wear across all teeth. Proper equilibration eliminates sharp edges, corrects uneven angles, and allows the jaw to move freely — promoting long-term comfort, soundness, and performance.

How often should I schedule a routine dental exam for my horse?

We recommend that each and every horse be examined atleast once a year.  Every 6 months is recommended if they are under the age of 5, over the age of 20, have conformational abnormalities or who are in steady work

How do I know if it’s time for a dental?

Regular dental care is essential to your horse’s comfort, performance, and overall health. Because dental changes happen gradually, the signs of discomfort are often subtle. Your horse may be due for an exam if you notice any of the following:

  • Dropping grain or hay while eating (“quidding”)
  • Undigested feed in manure
  • Bit resistance, head tossing, or difficulty flexing
  • Weight loss or a dull coat despite good nutrition
  • Excessive salivation or foul odor from the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing or eating hay
  • Unexplained behavioral changes under saddle
  • Nasal discharge or facial swelling
  • Long, uneven incisors or sharp enamel points visible during routine care

existing customers will receive reminders via email when their horses are due
